As promised, we'll have look at some of the stuff done so far.
I actually started experimenting with sounds in mid January. I had just had a discussion with the director about what kind of elements we are looking for. It was quite clear that I wanted to use synthesis to create something that represents change. This synthesised element would creep in slowly through something more organic, with acoustic instruments, found sounds and things like that. I started by searching for a good kick drum sound, and I took some synths from the university collection, that I was familiar with and allowed me to tweak the sound in depth. On the left corner you can see the analog synth MS-20 remake by Korg. I was after a quite soft but full sounding kick drum, and the MS-20 helped to create that sound, yet I had more fun with the Moog Mother32 modular synthesiser. I created a rhythmic pattern with modulation and LFO, that had interesting sonic qualities. It seemed to resemble a minimalistic technique called phasing, where two similar rhythmic patterns are slightly off tempo, yet fall back in sync after finishing a round.
I ended up using this pattern as a rhythmic trigger in Ableton Live. After converting the audio file into a midi file, I could use it with any sound. I wanted something organic for this sound, as it was meant for a scene that happens before the change to more synthetic and artificial sounding score.
I went with an instrument, that I had created before of a prepared bass guitar. The result has slight resemblance of the sonic characteristics of a clarinet, yet it is tricky to try to define as any particular instrument. The pitch is varying in semi-tones, yet the sound is quite dynamic and strong. I felt that it described the qualities I saw in the main character in this story: A young person leaving home with a mission, who is determined and strong, yet at the same time searching for something, unsure what she is going to find.
Here is example of the phasing rhythmic pattern made with Mother 32, followed by the same rhythm triggering the prepared bass-instrument:
